I just want to be prepared...

When it comes to our daily physical function, our arms and legs have very important purposes. Unfortunately, limbs can be prone to damage and injury in many unexpected ways in daily life.

From swelling and bruises to fractures and joint issues, there are many things to look out for when protecting and treating our limbs well.

Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sean Ng delved into some of the common (and not so common) limb injuries, and provided his valuable advice. Here are some key takeaways.

There is a variety of common elbow issues

Elbow injuries can range from:

  • fractures,
  • ligament tears,
  • or tennis elbow conditions (which occur when tendons are overloaded due to repetitive motions). [1]

With each problem, expect a different recovery period after surgery

Tennis elbow usually requires tendinous surgery. Complete healing may take two to three months.

Some treatments such as an elbow arthroscopic debridement could help you enjoy quicker healing and recovery times.

Other causes of elbow surgery can come with different recovery periods.

Post-operative treatment is important for elbow surgery

After the surgery, physiotherapy and rehabilitation are very important parts of the full recovery process. You need to prevent stiffness and restore your range of motion. Consult your orthopaedic surgeon for proper assessment and advice on the procedures you need to undergo. [2]

What is a damaged meniscus?

meniscus tear A damaged or torn meniscus (among the more common knee injuries) can typically be brought on by any activity that causes you to forcefully twist or rotate your knee. [3]

Treatments are determined by three factors

In most instances, treatment for a meniscal tear depends on the location, configuration, and extent of the tear itself. Your doctor may prescribe a course of medication and physiotherapy first.

Otherwise, arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery for severe meniscal tears would be the next best option.

What is an osteochondral injury?

An osteochondral injury usually refers to the damage of the smooth surface on the end of bones. These can range from small cracks to large pieces of the bone breaking off. [4]

There are conservative management methods

Medication, physiotherapy, and braces are some conservative management methods to try before surgery. However, if symptoms persist, it is unlikely that an osteochondral injury will heal without surgery.

If your finger is numb after injury, it could be an issue with the nerves

If pain and swelling are persistent after a finger injury and are followed by numbness and tingling, this may indicate that the nerves are damaged. A proper examination will be required as soon as possible to rule out a fracture and to establish a treatment.

What is a chondral ulcer?

A chondral ulcer can occur as a result of:

  • a pivot or twist on a bent knee, or
  • a direct blow to the knee.

Some chondral ulcers can be difficult to manage and failed conservative management may lead to surgical intervention. [5]

Some temporary treatments are available

Intra-articular visco-supplementation can help in the lubrication of the knee and can be used to offer some pain relief.

Physiotherapy, as well as medication, could work well but surgery may be needed if there is no recovery.

There are a few surgical options for dealing with chondral ulcers

A chondroplasty may be effective with regards to patching back the full thickness of the affected area. Some patients may require multi-step procedures if the ulcers do not heal. [6]

In the case of a limb injury, always go to a qualified medical professional such as an orthopaedic surgeon for a full assessment. His or her advice can help you determine the most effective treatment for your condition.
