How do you treat DDD (degenerative disc disease) with a slipped disc?

Degenerative spine disease includes both degenerated disc (known as "slipped" disc by lay person) and facet joint arthritis. It is actually not a "disease" (unlike cancer or diabetes) but a natural aging process of our spine as we age, similar to wear and tear in our joints and dementia. As such degenerated spine including "slipped" disc is not a disease that can be "treated". Rather, "treatment" for patients actually means management (or "reduction") of his neck/back pain and subsequent disability.

What are common symptoms of degenerative spine conditions?

The term degeneration in medicine means deterioration or decline of function of a cell, tissue or an organ with time, usually as a person ages. Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and Alzheimer disease are well known examples. Degenerative conditions occur in everyone as everybody will age without fail (i. e. "natural" degeneration) often after age of 40-50 but some degenerative conditions can occur at younger age (i. e. "acquired") after an injury (accident or overuse), an infection, or after inheriting a hereditary disease (e. g. ankylosing spondylitis of the spine).

How is an L4-L5 disc bulge treated?

An L4-5 disc bulge in your MRI, assuming your MRI radiologist meant a small disc protrusion in his report, represents an ageing disc that has naturally lost its water content and its cushion and height with time, resulting in a bulge, like a bulging "worn out" car tyre. Because this is a natural ageing process, it cannot be reversed or “cured” and disc bulges can also be seen in MRI even if you have no back pain as you age.
