Orthopaedic surgeons are devoted to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and muscles.
Some orthopaedic surgeons are generalists, while others specialize in certain areas of the body, such as:
If you have tried physiotherapy and the ankle remains persistently painful and swollen, it means that it was not a "simple ankle sprain". We need to do a thorough investigation to find out what structure has been injured. An MRI would be recommended as it could visualize the soft tissue better. It could be hairline fracture, a ligament tear or an osteochondral injury (a small part of the bone/ cartilage has been chipped off). Once we have established the diagnosis, then we can start the appropriate treatment.
Degenerative spine disease includes both degenerated disc (known as "slipped" disc by lay person) and facet joint arthritis. It is actually not a "disease" (unlike cancer or diabetes) but a natural aging process of our spine as we age, similar to wear and tear in our joints and dementia. As such degenerated spine including "slipped" disc is not a disease that can be "treated". Rather, "treatment" for patients actually means management (or "reduction") of his neck/back pain and subsequent disability.
