When should I seek medical attention to remove an inflamed skin cyst on my back that's still swollen despite applying pimple cream?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thank you for the question.

If you have an inflamed cyst of the skin, it is advisable for you to see a doctor as this may be due to a bacterial infection of an existing cyst.

Topical pimple creams are often unable to treat the infection, and oral antibiotics or even surgical drainage, if there is accumulation of pus, may be needed. If your cyst is getting larger, more painful and red, you should see your doctor or dermatologist for a proper assessment and management.

It would be best to get that skin lesion examined and treated as soon as you can. Treatment is aimed at treating infection and resolving the inflammation as the sequelae would be scarring. Depending on the examination, treatment can include coverage with antibiotics, injection to minimize inflammation, drainage of the lesion and surgical excision. I do not think tea tree oil would do much in the treatment of this condition. Hope that helps. All the best.

How can I treat a long-standing inflamed bump on my forehead?

I’m sorry to hear that you are suffering from this for the last 2 years. From the pictures, it does not seem to by a typical acne cyst. It may not even have been a pimple right from the start. I would suggest quickly seeing a dermatologist for your condition. There are various ways of removing this lesion which has good cosmetic outcomes. If necessary, he/she may also suggest sending the lesion for further testing depending on your consult. Hope this helps!
