I just want to be prepared...

Have you ever thought about reinvigorating your body image? Whether it is for cosmetic purposes or reconstructive reasons - or simply because you want that halter top to fit better - breast implants could help you feel more confident in your own skin [1] and about other psychosexual benefits. [2]

Breast augmentation has consistently been one of the top three aesthetic procedures undergone by patients in Singapore. If you are considering getting a breast implant, you probably have loads of questions in mind with regards to the procedure.

With that in mind, we will delve into the realm of breast implants, examine incision types for the procedures and the relevant costs that would hopefully assist you in your decision.

How are Breast Implant types selected?

There are many things to look out for when selecting the best breast implants for your body.

It is paramount that you trust your plastic surgeon.

He will conduct a pre-operative assessment of your body, in which it is very important to communicate your expectations, desires, and concerns. This way, the doctor can assist you in your decision for a breast augmentation procedure that is both realistic and suitable.

Breast implant technology is continuously evolving and has given rise to a plethora of breast implant types, textures, and shapes. There are a multitude of breast implant qualities and the important things to consider would be its type, texture, and shape.

What are the general types of Breast Implants?

In general, there are two broad categories of breast implants, namely:

  • Silicone Breast Implants

These are implants filled with silicone gel. The gel content makes the overall visual and physical feel similar to that of natural breast tissue.

  • Saline Breast Implants

These implants are filled with sterile saltwater. In the case of an implant leak, the saline released will be naturally expelled by the body, unlike silicon gel which could possibly cause complications.

The trend in usage between these two types has been varied. In the past, most surgeons have switched from silicone to saline-filled implants. Nowadays, most surgeons have switched back to silicone-filled implants.

This is because the latest generation of silicone implants have strong, thick silicone shells with silicone gel that would not leak into your body in the rare case that there should there ever be a rupture - features that provide an extra level of safety!

What are the different textures of Breast Implants?

The texture of the breast implant is very important as it affects its mobility within the breast and its suitability for each patient’s expectation and physiology.

When a breast implant is textured, your tissue grows into the textures - reducing the risk of scarring and helping the implant stay in place. The risk of capsular contracture is also lower with textured implants.

  • Smooth Breast Implants

As you move, these implants are more mobile within the breast, making it feel more natural.

  • Textured breast implants

These implants are not as mobile within the breast and are very unlikely to be repositioned. It may not feel as natural as smooth breast implants.

  • Nano-textured breast implants

As one of the latest developments in breast implant technology, nano-textured breast implants have claimed to be more compatible with the body’s own cell surfaces. Hence, it would be less likely to cause complications.

At present, there is an increasing trend of surgeons using nano-textured or smooth-round implants.

What are the different Shapes of Breast Implants?

There are two main shapes for breast implants that have different qualities. Although an implant can make your breasts look larger, the right shape would help the implants look more natural or aesthetically appealing when they settle on your chest. This is also dependent on the patient’s anatomy.

  • Round Breast Implants

A traditional breast implant design, round breast implants can make the breasts look fuller and more whole. They are also less likely to rotate. They are ideal for those who want to substantially increase the size of their breasts.

  • Teardrop Breast Implants

Overall, these implants have a more natural look and feel, and fill the lower part of the breast more. They are also more customizable to better fit your anatomical features.

How are incisions made for Breast Augmentation?

For the breast implant to be placed into the body, there has to be an incision or access point made. The most suitable incision method used will depend on the patient’s body types, expectations, and type of breast implants.

  • Incision in the axilla (armpit)
  • Inframammary fold (base of the breast)
  • Around the areola (pigmented area around the nipple)

The most commonly used incision is the inframammary incision. As it is made at the base of the breast, it tends to heal well and leaves an imperceptible scar that falls in the natural skin fold. It is also the most versatile of the incisions.

That being said, your surgeon will be able to discern what type of incision would best suit you.

How big is the scar from Breast Augmentation?

Different incision types will give rise to scars of different lengths. But fret not! Across the board, the incisions are all planned and executed in a way that is least obvious.

  • Incision in the axilla (armpit)

The resultant scar can be about 4cm but hidden well.

  • Inframammary fold (base of the breast)The scar can be as small as 3cm depending on the size of the implant. This is considered very short!

  • Around the areola (pigmented area around the nipple)

The scar will be well hidden within the pigmented part of the nipple.
