What is the best treatment for a sebaceous cyst?

Doctor's Answers 2

Sorry to hear that you are having trouble with an inflamed cyst. It is quite common for cysts to appear on the skin. It is considered harmless but may increase in size or suddenly become inflamed or infected over time. If there are such changes, surgical removal (excision) of the cyst would be your best option.

If there is also pain and inflammation, you will often need a course of antibiotics to help the area settle down as well.

We routinely perform such cyst removal at our on site day surgery facility. Do let us know if we can be of help. Hope you feel better soon!

Generally speaking if the sebaceous cyst has complications such as infection, pain that is affecting your quality of life etc, I would advice a simple excision biopsy which is a quick procedure performed under local anesthesia.

Do note that excision biopsy of a sebaceous cyst does have a small risk of recurrence.

You may wish to consult a doctor who performs minor surgical procedures such as excision biopsies or a general surgeon.

Hope this helps!

What should I do next for a cyst on my cheek?

Thanks for the question. I do think that you should see your dermatologist or gp early to get the cyst examined. That is is becoming red and painful is an indication that it may be becoming infected or inflamed. Your doctor will assess to see if antibiotics are required or if drainage or excision of the cyst is necessary.

How to remove cyst on cheek? (photo)

It would be best to get that skin lesion examined and treated as soon as you can. Treatment is aimed at treating infection and resolving the inflammation as the sequelae would be scarring. Depending on the examination, treatment can include coverage with antibiotics, injection to minimize inflammation, drainage of the lesion and surgical excision. I do not think tea tree oil would do much in the treatment of this condition. Hope that helps. All the best.
