What are treatment options for molluscum contagiosum?

Doctor's Answer

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection due to a pox virus that is commonly seen in young children. It presents as multiple small pink spots with a white depressed centre. They can appear as clusters and is often seen in children with eczema, especially over the inflamed skin areas. It is also sometimes seen in adults, where it can be transmitted due to skin to skin contact with the infected areas. Treatment options include:

1. Watchful waiting - molluscum papules can resolve spontaneously as the immune system matures. However, the patient runs the risk of developing more lesions as the spots can spread especially after scratching and injury.

2. Medicated creams can be used to treat molluscum. Treatment can take a few months and the technique of application is important. Please be patient when using this method as it may take a while for it to work.

3. Cryotherapy or freezing the molluscum using cold therapy can also be used. Again a few sessions may be required.

4. Prick and express of molluscum lesions can be used to treat the active lesions. This is usually a one-off treatment and patients can see a good resolution of the molluscum spots once the wound heals.

Regardless of the treatment chosen, molluscum contagiosum can recur after treatment. Once healed, the treated areas are often left with pink/brown marks or even depressed scars. See your doctor or Dermatologist early to discuss the best treatment options for your child's age and skin condition.
