What are the side effects of using an IUD like Mirena?

Doctor's Answer

Mirena IUS is one of the most effective forms of hormonal contraception available. Most women who opt to use this as their preferred method of reversible long-term contraception do not encounter any problems.

However, like all medication, there are some women who may experience some side effects to a certain degree. these are listed down below in no particular order.

  • Headache

  • Acne

  • Breast tenderness

  • Irregular bleeding, which can improve after six months of use

  • Mood changes

  • Cramping or pelvic pain

If you were to experience any of these, then it would be a good idea to discuss this with your gynaecologist to see if you should continue with mirena or switch to something else.
