What are the side effects of using an IUD like Mirena?

Doctor's Answers 2

Mirena IUS is one of the most effective forms of hormonal contraception available. Most women who opt to use this as their preferred method of reversible long-term contraception do not encounter any problems.

However, like all medication, there are some women who may experience some side effects to a certain degree. these are listed down below in no particular order.

  • Headache

  • Acne

  • Breast tenderness

  • Irregular bleeding, which can improve after six months of use

  • Mood changes

  • Cramping or pelvic pain

If you were to experience any of these, then it would be a good idea to discuss this with your gynaecologist to see if you should continue with mirena or switch to something else.

The Mirena IUD is an extremely effective method of long acting reversible contraception (LARC) that can help prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

On top of that, it is also useful to manage conditions such as heavy menstrural periods and painful period cramps.

Some common side effects after getting a Mirena IUD fitted can include some irregular spotting which can usually resolve after a few months, following which you will not experience any bleeding at all.
This is due to the progesterone hormone that is inside the Mirena which keeps the womb lining thin.

Overall, the Mirena IUD is something really useful if you are considering birth control as well as to manage any menstural issues you may be facing.

When do I need to go to the A&E for low blood pressure if I'm pregnant?

it's quite normal for blood pressure to drop early in pregancy as the blood vessels dilate and blood volume also increases to accomodate the growing baby. Blood pressure in fact reaches the lowest point somewhere in middle of second trimester and then starts to rise again and returns to normal after childbirth. Some women may experience dizziness and lightheadedness due to this but if symptoms persist you may have to see your obstetrician as there maybe other reasons too ie anemia, dehydration, heart or endocrine issues and that the pregnancy is proceeding as expected.

What are some signs I can look out for in an early pregnancy apart from using a pregnancy test kit?

Some women have no symptoms and signs of pregnancy at all and only realise that they are pregnant when their menses is delayed and their urine pregnancy test is positive. Others do suffer to various symptoms such as: Nausea/Dizziness, Mood swings, Vomiting, Gastric discomfort, Abdominal bloating, Breast tenderness and/or Breast enlargement. Most women are able to cope with these and they will eventually resolve as the pregnancy progresses (although it is not uncommon for them to get worse before getting better).
