When is it advisable to replace my baby tooth with an implant?

Doctor's Answer

Thank you for your enquiry on baby teeth and dental implants.

From the Dental Panoramic Xray that you have provided , it is seen that you have several over-retained baby teeth due to congenitally missing adult teeth.

Generally speaking, it is advisable to replace your baby tooth with an implant if :

1. It is badly decayed

2. It is very loose and mobile

3. It is cracked, damaged or badly worn down

4. It is affecting the way you smile because it is aesthetically not pleasing to you

5. Dental x-rays reveal, an infection around the roots of the baby tooth or root resorption

The above 5 points are some of the more common indications to remove baby teeth and to have them replaced with implants. But having said that, many of my patients have had baby teeth in their mouth well into their adulthood with no issues and problems, without needing any extractions.

Therefore every patient has to be assessed on a case by case basis.

I wish you all the best in finding a good dentist that you trust and have rapport with in seeking an opinion about the suitability of dental implants in your case.

Kind Regards,

Dr Gerald Tan
