When it comes to Vitamin C intake for young children, is more necessarily better?

Doctor's Answer

The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) includes the vitamin C we obtain from both the food we eat and any supplements that we take.

Category

Vitamin C: Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)

1-3 years: 15 mg/day

4-8 years: 25 mg/day

9-13 years: 45 mg/day

Vitamin C supplements sometimes can cause stomach upset, heartburns, tummy cramps and headaches in some susceptible individuals. High doses of vitamin C can cause more intense symptoms, such as kidney stones and severe diarrhoea. For persons who take any regular medicines or chemotherapy drugs, it is important to alert the prescribing doctor as Vitamin C can interact with drugs like aspirin, acetaminophen, antacids, and blood thinners. Nicotine (from cigarettes) may reduce the effects of vitamin C.
