How is Mycoplasma genitalium transmitted?

Doctor's Answer

Hi Maddy

Thanks for bringing up Mycoplasma Genitalium, which is a common Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) in young adults that not many people are aware about.

Mycoplasma Genitalium is a bacteria which is transmitted through sexual contact, most commonly through vaginal and anal sex. It may possibly be transmitted through oral sex, although the bacteria has very rarely been found in patient's throats.

Males who get infected with this bacteria can experience symptoms of urethritis , which is inflammation of the urethra causing a burning sensation during urinating, or have a discharge from the penis.

Females may experience a similar burning sensation during urination and vaginal discharge, or even have more severe fever and tummy pain from pelvic inflammatory disease.

The only known way that the bacteria is not transmitted sexually is from mother-to-child; when a newborn passes through the birth canal of a mother who has the infection.

I hope you find this information useful.
