How does endometriosis affect IVF?

Doctor's Answer

Endometriosis is one of the commonest causes of difficulty in conceiving, and it can also reduce the chances of your success in IVF. If you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, it is important that you have a detailed discussion with your gynaecologist regarding the type, extent and location of your endometriosis.

This is a treatable disease, and it can be temporarily eliminated from your body to increase your chances of success with IVF.

This may be in the form of medication, injections or surgery like laparoscopy depending on the type of endometriosis you have. In particular, if you have an ovarian endometriotic cyst, it may be important for it to be removed before pregnancy, so as to reduce the risks of the cyst complicating the pregnancy.
