How can I soothe my eczema-prone skin?

Doctor's Answer

Thank you for the question.

People with eczema-prone skin may have an underlying predisposition for developing eczema. There may a genetic tendency to develop eczema and many people do have a positive family history of atopy or eczema.

In eczema-prone skin, the skin is often dry and more sensitive. It is important to use gentle cleansers or soap-free cleansers as regular or harsh soaps can dry the skin further. Also use moisturizers regularly, as the this helps to strength the skin barrier and can help reduce the itch and reduce eczema flares.

Avoid scratching the skin as this can worsen the eczema and make the skin more red and itchy. Also avoid hot and sweaty environments as this may aggravate the itch. If the skin is very itchy, using a cold compress may be helpful to relief the itch.

If the skin is red and inflamed, this indicates active eczema and there may be overlying skin infection. Your doctor can prescribed some steroids creams to the help reduce the inflammation. Antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection if present. So do see your doctor or dermatologist if the eczema is persistent or not better.

Hope these simple tips can help!
