How can I claim Medisave for dental treatment in Singapore?

Doctor's Answers 3

I would advise you to find a dentist to get a thorough dental examination. He/She would be able to advise and plan a list of dental procedures that you will need to improve your oral health.

If cost is a concern, you can always have the attending dentist present a treatment plan to you before proceeding on with any dental treatment. This would also prevent miscommunication.

Dental procedures that are not Medisave claimable:

  • Dental examination or consultation
  • Scaling & Polishing (Routine or complex)
  • Dental Fillings/Crowns/Bridges/Veneers
  • Teeth whitening
  • Dentures
  • Root Canal Treatment
  • Tooth extraction

Dental procedures that are Medisave claimable:

  • Wisdom tooth surgery
  • Dental implant surgery
  • Surgical removal of retained roots

In general cases, surgical procedures are mostly Medisave claimable but do take note that you might not be able to use your Medisave for 100% treatment fee coverage as there are limits to Medisave claim submission. Dental fees and Medisave claims are based on the dental procedures you received and case complexity.

Hope you will be able to get your dental issues resolved as soon as possible!

Most dental clinics in Singapore would be able to help you in processing the Medisave for your dental treatment. However you can only claim Medisave for surgical procedures such as

  • Wisdom tooth surgery
  • Surgical removal of broken roots
  • Jaw surgery in certain orthodontic cases
  • Dental Implants
  • Surgical procedures for root canals, or gum treatment etc

Your dentist would be able to advise you on the various procedures that can be claimed, and also the amount that can be claimed for each procedures, as there is a limit to the Medisave claim submission.

Unfortunately, routine dental procedures such as

  • scaling and polishing
  • fillings
  • crowns and bridges
  • root canal treatment
  • dentures

cannot be claimed through Medisave.

If cost is of a concern, you might want to check if you are eligible for some government subsidy like CHAS.

The Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) in Singapore enables citizens from lower- to-middle income households, as well as all Pioneers, to receive subsidies for medical and dental care at participating General Practitioner (GP) and dental clinics.

Hope the above information helps!

There are very specific criteria for making a Medisave claim.

Medisave can only be claimed for surgical procedures like removal of impacted wisdom teeth or broken roots, insertion of implants, jaw surgery etc.

Medisave cannot be used for routine dental work like fillings, simple extractions, crowns, dentures, root canal treatment. It certainly cannot be used for cosmetic procedures like straightening of teeth or teeth whitening.

If you are planning a procedure that qualifies for Medisave deduction, your dental clinic can advise you on how the claim can be done. You will need to fill up a couple of forms and the clinic will take care of the actual deduction. It is quite simple really.

Is there such a thing as a dental implant specialist in Singapore?

The Singapore Dental Council does not list implant dentistry as a separate specialty. The specialties that train dentists for implant placement are oral & maxillofacial surgery, periodontics (gum) and even endodontics (root canal) fields. You can check if your dentist is listed on the specialist dental register here. The Dental Specialist Accreditation Board (DSAB) is the body that is responsible for the accreditation and listing of dental specialists in Singapore. This does not mean that general dentists (non-specialists) are prohibited from placing implants.

How is a toothache treated during pregnancy?

All acute infections should be treated early whether or not there is a pregnancy. Infections can affect the health of both the mother and the developing baby. There is evidence that maternal infections during pregnancy can result in low birth weight or even premature delivery. A toothache occurs when the pulp (the nerve of the tooth) is infected by bacteria that cause decay by burrowing deep into the tooth. The pulp becomes severely inflamed as it is overcome by the infection. Chemical changes from the inflammation along the nerve pathway trigger nerve endings to go into overdrive.
