Capsular contracture is a very specific condition whereby when you have an implant, your body creates a capsule around it because it is a foreign object.

Every foreign object in your body will have a capsule around it. And these capsules, over time, can have problems. Not that it will, but it can.

One of the problems you may have is that the capsule will start to shrink and because of that the implant will start to feel a bit harder, it may become misshapen.

And then the patients may start to feel pain. So they can feel the implant hardening, they can change shape, they can shift a bit. And of course, it can be painful.

For breast fat grafting procedures, where are possible areas for the fat to be harvested from?

Fat grafting is a useful method for augmenting breast volume for patients who prefer to avoid having an implant or an incision. It can also be used to enhance the results of breast augmentation with implants (the hybrid technique). However, the amount of augmentation possible does depend on the availability of suitable fat for grafting. The donor areas most commonly used are the tummy, the thighs, and the buttocks.

How do breast implants affect breastfeeding?

Breast implants used for breast augmentation these days are most commonly cohesive gel silicone implants. The polymer used is of medical-grade as opposed to industrial-grade silicone, and therefore much more biologically inert and safe. The question I often get asked by my patients with regards to breastfeeding are: Will the silicone leak into the breast milk and make it unsafe for my baby? Will engorgement be worse? Will I be able to breastfeed with the implant in place or will the milk supply be affected? The answer to the first question is a DEFINITE NO.
