Can genital warts be permanently cured?

Doctor's Answer

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) causes genital warts. It is usually spread by direct skin-to-skin contact during sexual exposures (vaginal, anal and oral) or even heavy petting.

The transmission occurs when warts are present, but is also possible even when there are no visible signs. There are individuals who carry the virus for months and years but exhibit no symptoms. Hence, it is difficult to determine the source of the infection.

This is a manageable infection, as warty growths can be successfully treated (using cryotherapy, or liquid nitrogen) if present.

However, there is no cure and a recurrence may occur even after treatment.
