What are the laser options (other than CO2) for facial flat mole removal? Is Er: YAG laser less likely to result in scarring?

Doctor's Answer

Thank you for your question. After examining the mole and determining it not to be a cause of health concern, laser treatments to remove a facial flat mole include ablative and non-ablative options.

CO2 and Er:Yag lasers are both lasers that can remove moles by ablation. Ablative lasers are commonly used to treat moles that are raised, indicating that they grow from deeper layers of the skin. As you rightly mentioned, an Er:Yag mole removal treatment is less likely to result in much scarring when done with the right technique and expertise, and I prefer to use that over a CO2 laser to remove moles that need ablation. This is because the 2940nm wavelength of Er:Yag laser is more selective for water compared to 10600nm wavelength of CO2, therefore it removes moles precisely and creates minimal heat damage to underlying tissues. This allows wounds to heal faster with a lower chance of significant scarring.

If your facial flat mole happens to be small, it may even be suitable for non-ablative laser removal, which leaves no scarring in many cases. These lasers select for unwanted mole tissue while leaving normal skin around it unaffected. 1 treatment session is usually sufficient, however, touch ups may be required during subsequent reviews.

It is possible for moles that have been removed by lasers to recur after a period of months to years, although the chances are less so with flat moles. As with all procedures, post care with good sun protection and proper skincare are equally important, to ensure the best healing outcomes and minimal scarring. Do visit your doctor for a consult and examination, for a proper diagnosis and suitable mole removal treatment to be carried out. Hope this helps!
