How does Smile Design work in improving my appearance?

With Smiledesign, we are able to change the position, size, shape and colour of the teeth. Using a variety of procedures, such as Porcelain Veneers, Crowns, Crown Lengthening etc, we are able to custom design smiles for each patient. Mockups allow us to check the design inside the patient's mouth before manufacturing the veneers. We are able to make sure the size, shape and colour of the teeth are correct and even to check on the lip shape.

How do Invisalign and Smile Design compare in improving jaw shape?

Neither method can correct the shape of the jaws which is governed by the bone structure. The only method to alter the shape of the jaws would be through Orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery). If what needs correcting are lips and facial profiles, then both methods can certainly make improvements. Invisalign uses CADCAM technology to alter tooth position. Mock-ups can be digitally rendered on a 2D picture of the patient [1]. Smiledesign uses a 3D mock-up of the patient's teeth. The patient is also able to experience a physical mock-up of their smile.

How can orthodontics, i.e. braces and aligners, help to alter the anatomy of my smile?

The anatomy of the smile takes into account of the: Face Lips Jaws Size Shapes Colour Position of teeth But, most importantly is what the patient actually wants to see. In the right cases and with the right conditions, braces and aligners are an excellent treatment choice, however, they can only alter the position of teeth. Braces and aligners straighten teeth helps by shifting them to a more pleasing arrangement. The ultimate goal is to attain straight teeth.

Apart from braces, what can be done to improve the appearance of my teeth? (photo)

The first step in deciding on the mode of treatment for anyone is to group your needs in three categories: What is necessary to change What would be nice to change, and What is unnecessary to change From your picture, improvements can be made in tooth position, colour, size and shape. Do please note that braces will only be able to improve your tooth position, as a result, the final appearance will be a compromised solution. What may also be advised is to widen your smile so you show more teeth when you do smile. This will also give you more support for your upper lip.

What should every patient know about before getting veneers?

Veneers are a wonderful treatment modality to repair or beautify teeth in what is termed as minimally-invasive dentistry [1]. Before exploring this treatment, we would first advise patients to understand their overall goals they want achieved. Finding the right dentist is tricky. Taking advice from friends who have had veneers done, checking on reputable reviews can also be helpful. When consulting your dentist, discuss your goals and ask the dentist for advice on his recommendations.

How does dental bonding compare to veneers when it comes to making teeth appear longer?

Both dental bonding and dental veneers can make teeth appear longer. Bonding of the tooth is definitely cheaper, faster and, possibly, less invasive. Placing dental veneers requires more time, cost and there is some shaving of the teeth. The disadvantages of bonding are that it is not as long-lasting, they tend to stain more easily and they are weak. It is advisable not to bite with these teeth on anything hard. If they break then please understand that more tooth needs to be removed to be able to place a new filling.
