As we age, collagen production slows down and everything starts to sag and become droopy. Our tissue structures and muscles weaken — and this applies to our eyes too! When the membrane holding up the eye fat pads weakens, the fat drops down and this leads to eye bags. Other contributing factors could also be due to fluid retention, late nights, sun exposure, smoking or genetic predisposition.

Eye bags are generally harmless and rarely a cause for concern, but we don’t always like them. Sometimes a cold compress or eye cream just doesn’t cut it. Lucky for us, advancements in technology have brought about ways to get rid of eye bags without having to go under the knife. Curious about your options? Aesthetic Medicine expert, Dr Chew Khek Kah, gives us insight on his top picks of 5 non-surgical ways to get rid of eyebags.

1. Non-Incisional Laser Eyebag Removal (NILER)

A great alternative to surgical blepharoplasty, NILER can help get rid of mild to moderately severe eyebags.

A NILER procedure is carried out with an Accusculpt laser with a 600 micron 1444nm wavelength fibre optic handpiece. It involves a local anaesthetic first injected into the eyebag area, followed by a laser fibre insertion that helps emulsify fat in the eyebag and tighten skin.

Generally, only one session is required and the entire process lasts for about 5-10 minutes, with optimal results seen in about one to two months. There is also minimal downtime, with occasional swelling and bruising in the first few days after treatment.

2. Non Surgical Eyebag Rejuvenation (ERT)

If you’re looking to treat mild eyebags, Eyebag Radiofrequency Treatment (ERT) might be a good option for you! This treatment uses a monopolar Radiofrequency device that emits RF energy to emulsify excess fat in the eye area. It also stimulates collagen formation to produce a tightening effect on the skin around the eye.

This is all done with a local anaesthetic prior, so the procedure is virtually painless and takes about 5 -10 minutes to complete. Depending on its severity, one to two treatments may be needed for optimal results.

3. Dermal Fillers

Injectables are a popular alternative to surgical eyebag removal. Dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid are injected to help smoothen out the eye bag appearance and induce collagen production.

In my clinic, a HIFU procedure and dermal fillers can be used concurrently to get the best results with more visible changes in a single session. The effects of dermal fillers last about 6-9 months, depending on the type of filler gel used.

4. Threads

Threads are another option for getting rid of eyebags by subtly lifting and tightening the skin around the eyes. It also activates the body’s natural healing system, stimulating collagen formation and remodelling for a rejuvenating effect.

In my opinion they are suitable only for mild eyebags as they have little or no effect on the prolapsed fat in the eyebag.

5. High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

For mild to moderate severity eyebags, HIFU uses ultrasound to deliver heat to deeper layers of the skin and this heat helps stimulate collagen production, leading to a tightening, lifting and rejuvenating effect. In my practice, I usually combine this with a dermal filler for a better outcome.

If you’re looking for a quick fix; this treatment has minimal downtime, with possible redness that usually subsides in a few hours. Its effects last for about 6-12 months.

Summary

There are numerous ways to help get rid of eyebags, both energy-based devices and injectables! Your aesthetic doctor may even recommend a combination of treatments for the best results. Most of these procedures are so quick and minimally-invasive that you can do them over your lunchtime break.

Always make sure that you communicate both your desires and concerns with your doctor so that they can plan the best course of treatment for you.
