Questions 10

What's the most important advice doctors can give to someone who wants fillers?

I would say do your research, information is readily available if you google. You get a rough idea of what fillers are and then you can get more information from your physician. I would say don’t rush into it. It’s an elective procedure but once you have a good understanding of what you are going for, it would be a pleasurable experience for you and the doctor.

How do fillers cause blindness?

When we inject fillers, in unlikely cases, the filler is injected into the bloodstream and affects blood flow to the eye. The eye will have no blood and no oxygen, so the eye will go blind. Which is why it's important that we as physicians know our anatomy well and to avoid certain areas that we are not supposed to go into, but understanding anatomy is one. And secondly, usually, for areas that are more dangerous, we use what we call a cannula, which is a blunt needle instead of a sharp needle. So if it's a blunt needle it is less likely we inject directly into the bloodstream.

Are there any risks in getting Rejuran, botox or fillers when on Accutane?

The short answer is, it's ok. It's ok to have botox, fillers when you are on Accutane. But you might want to avoid certain things like laser treatment on the skin, fractional lasers, skin lasers, essentially I would avoid or rather you should stop for a bit before getting laser treatment done. But for injectables, they are generally safe, unless your skin is really sensitive, at that point then maybe you may want to wait a bit before getting any of these.

How long do I have to wait before getting hyaluronic acid injected in the same area where I got Ellanse fillers?

Elllanse is a bio stimulating agent where after the injection you let your own skin and body produce collagen and do the magic. It results in fewer lines, less sagginess. But I would say it takes time to work as that's the nature of ellanse filler and any bio stimulating agents like Profhilo and Sculptra. I would advise you to let the effects take place before putting the fillers in.

Can skincare products with hyaluronic acid (HA) be used as a substitute for HA fillers or HA skin boosters?

The short answer is no. The reason being is because when we inject fillers, we inject to different layers of the skin and it penetrates further. But for topical creams with hyaluronic acid properties, I would say there are 2 factors that will determine how well it absorbs. Obviously it will be less wild compared to the injection but it does not mean it does not work. Firstly, let's say number one would be the driver, which stand for the specific molecules in the product that helps to drive the hyaluronic acid into the deeper layer of the skin.

Is it possible to build immunity against fillers?

Hi Ashley,Thank you for the question, and it is certainly a relevant one. As opposed to immunity, some patients metabolize fillers more quickly than others. It depends on the resistance to degradation by native hyaluronidase (an enzyme that degrades hyaluronic acid found in fillers). In other words, injected fillers will still have the intended effect/outcome, but your body may burn through the fillers quicker than its expected longevity. Hope that answers your question.

How can I avoid the unnatural, unaesthetic, and exaggerated effect of fillers?

I would rephrase the question as 'how not to look like you had treatment'. You know when you go out of the clinic or when you go out, people will say oh have you ever get fillers done. It is always important to discuss with the physician to see what effects you are trying to achieve. Because I think once you reach that effect, you have to stop. As mentioned, people actually do get addicted, I have clients who are actually addicted.

Are fillers a temporary or permanent solution for chickenpox scars?

That is very specific. Well, fillers actually help with scarring, but I would say it depends on what type of scar. The short answer is yes you can, but you might also want to consider other options that actually specifically deal with the scar. But filler might not be my first choice at least for the scar.

Can I just get fillers for just the tip of my nose?

Yes, you can have a filler just for the tip. But I would say that is a more delicate area. Essentially, to answer the question, I would say, it depends on the shape and also what you are trying to achieve. Because like you mentioned earlier whether rhinoplasty is an option or fillers are an option, you really have to depend on the structure and whether you can achieve on what you are trying to achieve, but the straightforward and short answer is yes.

What is the optimal age for getting dermal fillers?

I do not think there is an optimal age. Legally speaking above 21 for sure. I guess it all depends; if you are 22 years old and there’s no hollowness or sagginess, I don’t see why you need a filler or anything at all unless you have some acne scars, for that age range, usually acne scar is a problem. But, let us say you are 25 and have a hollow, sunken temple then a temple filler might be suitable for you.
