Are there any harmful side effects to delaying my period with pills?

Hi,Most girls delay their periods via the use of hormonal pills. As these pills contain hormones, common side effects can include bloating, headache, weight gain or acne. Side effects experienced will depend on the individual as well. If those pills are taken as a once off to delay your period due to reasons such as travel, there are usually no long lasting harmful effects. However, these pills should only be taken under direct instructions from your doctor. Taking them in the wrong manner or in the wrong dosage may result in unwanted side effects or a more irregular menstural cycle.

When will my period resume after giving birth?

It is not surprising that your period has not returned even though you are 7 months postpartum because of the very fact that you are still breastfeeding! Some women may not get their periods back even up to a year after giving birth as they continue to breastfeed their child throughout. Women who do not breastfeed may expect their periods to return much quicker, as early as 6-8 weeks after their delivery. However, should you experience any further symptoms that may be of concern to you, it may be good to see a doctor for more advice.

How long should I wait before seeing a doctor if my period is late?

If your period has already been late by 3 months and you have already ruled out the possibility of pregnancy, then it would be advisable to see a doctor for this as soon as possible. This is so that we can do further investigations to rule out other causes of a delayed period. You may also be given medications to induce your periods as a prolonged time of not getting your period can potentially lead to an unhealthy womb lining.

What should I do next if I missed 2 contraceptive pills?

Hi there,It is good to know that you are taking birth control pills for contraception. Birth control pills are a very reliable form of contraception if taken correctly. Your next course of action will depend on when in the pack the missed pills were, eg: week 1, 2 or 3. However,if you had missed taking 2 consecutive pills, the birth control effect would have been lost during that period. The fact that you also had unprotected intercourse during this period would mean that you do have an increased risk of pregnancy.
