What are the chances of a dermoid ovarian cyst twisting and bursting?

Doctor's Answers 1

An ovarian dermoid cyst is a fluid filled sac which arises at birth and has the ability to differentiate into several structures such as hair, teeth, fluid or skin glands (sweat glands).

These growths tend to develop in a woman during their reproductive years. A dermoid cyst tends to be mobile (because they are not often associated with pelvic adhesions) so pain as a result of ovarian torsion is a common presentation.

It can also leak or rupture if it were to fill up with fluid. Sometimes they can even become cancerous. Ovarian dermoid cysts which enlarge rapidly or cause pain are usually removed via keyhole laparoscopic surgery.

Will Medisave cover my vaccination cost if I am above the recommended age in Singapore?

In Singapore, unfortunately, Medisave is very strict. If you are not in the suitable age limit, you are not able to be covered under Medisave. However, the scheme is only applicable to the Cervarix or Gardasil (4-valent HPV vaccine). Gardasil-9 is actually very affordable.

What are the options and costs involved to definitively detect ovarian cysts? (photo)

There are a lot of women with cysts in their ovaries in which they are not aware of as they remain asymptomatic. These ovarian cysts are usually detected when women come forward for their routine gynaecology check-up or when they have symptoms like pelvic pain or abnormal vaginal bleeding. The best and cheapest way to diagnose them is via a pelvic ultrasound scan. The other but more expensive ways include MRI or CT scans. Their appearance on these scans can help us differentiate as to whether these ovarian cysts are likely to be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
