After a joint injury, there is a high likelihood of the development of secondary osteoarthritis at the affected joint. Some measures to prevent that includes:

  • Reduce the load and strain on the affected joint

This may involve a change in habits and lifestyle, depending on the affected joint. Appropriate exercises must be performed daily to improve the strength and condition of the muscles surrounding the affected joint. These exercises should be guided by a qualified physiotherapist or occupational therapist. This is to ensure that you do not inadvertently injure the joint further by doing the incorrect exercises or doing the right exercises incorrectly.

  • Take joint supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin

These supplements help support joint health but do not restore lost cartilage. In many patients, continuing on joint supplements help with relieving inflammation around the injured joints and thus relieve pain.

  • Take anti-inflammatory supplements, such as ginger and turmeric oral preparations

These help to relieve inflammation around the body naturally and can be taken daily with minimal side effects.

How can one resolve knee pain even after a knee replacement surgery?

Thank you for your question. Persistent severe pain after a right knee replacement is abnormal especially when her other knee replacement was doing fine. I'd strongly advise you bring your grandmom for a checkup and we'll need to do a thorough investigations including X rays, blood tests and advanced imaging (MRI/ CT) to find out what is the cause of this persistent pain. The cause of persistent pain would include infection, implant malposition, cement fracture or referred pain. Only after the cause of the persistent pain is identified then we can talk about the treatment.

How is arthritis diagnosed in a young female with aching finger joints?

The aches and pain in your hand may not be entirely due to just "overuse". Arthritis means inflammation in the joints, typically we classified into 4 categories: 1. "Normal" wear and tear/ Aging (For e. g Osteoarthritis, Spondylosis) - these happens in every person, when you age, there will be more wear and tear, althought not everyone will have pain. It is very similar to a car, when the mileage hits a certain number, there is bound to be some wear and tear in the tyres. 2.
