The thyroid gland is an organ in the human body that secretes a hormone called thyroxine that helps maintain the metabolism of the body. I classify thyroid issues broadly into a hormone issue vs an anatomical issue.

For hormone issue, if the problem is that of “high levels” or Hyperthyroidism, patients present with symptoms of a “high metabolic state”, for example, unintentional weight loss, palpitations or sense of heart beating very fast, feels hot and perspires more than usual, anxiety or nervousness, tremors of their hands.

If the problem is that of “low levels” or Hypothyroidism, patients present with the reverse. They present with increased fatigue, weight gain, feels cold all the time, dry skin. If it is an anatomical issue, usually my patients come to me complaining of a neck swelling with no other symptoms. Unless the swelling is very huge, it can cause them difficulty in swallowing or talking.

When is surgery required for temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ)?

Please don't consider surgery for TMJ issues! TMJ disorders are a misnomer. The condition is a result of high-stress levels and our normal reflex response to this stress. TMJ issues are, therefore, a result of hyperfunction. The joints and muscles are just symptoms. We recommend stress management and conservative prevention therapy to manage the symptoms.

How effective is electroconvulsive therapy as compared to other forms of treatments for mental disorders?

ECT (electroconvulsive therapy, or electroshock therapy) is the electrical induction of the type of generalized cerebral seizure associated with a tonic-clonic convulsion, with the objective of treating an abnormal mental state or neurological disorder. It involves the patient being put to sleep with an anaesthetic. A tiny amount of current is then passed across the head. This causes the person to have a fit or seizure. It is believed that the seizure changes the chemicals in the brain and leads to an improvement in the mental state or neurological disorder.
