Are there any natural health supplements that doctors recommend to calm down Tourette's syndrome or TICS as an alternative to heavy medications?

What is Tourette Syndrome?

Persons with Tourette syndrome (TS) present with repetitive movements or unwanted sounds that cannot be easily controlled. For instance, a patient whom I treated recently would repeatedly blink his eyes, shrug his shoulders and blurt out throat clearing sounds. Tics typically show up between ages 2 and 15, with the average being around 6 years of age. Males are about three to four times more likely than females to develop Tourette syndrome.

Treatment

Although there is no cure for Tourette syndrome, treatments are available. Many people with Tourette syndrome may not require treatment when their symptoms are mild. In many patients tics often lessen or become controlled after the teen years.

It has been estimated that about 60 to 80% of children with TS have co-occurring conditions including anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, and behavioral problems, with more than one-third of all people with TS also having obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is important to treat these co-occurring conditions as well.

Before the manifestation of a tic, individuals may experience an intense sensation or urge in the muscle group that is about to react. A crucial step to managing Tourette symptoms is learning to identify this sensation. Learning how to do this can be an effective method as teens become more aware of their condition. In addition to prescribed medications, cognitive behavioral interventions, habit reversal training, and psychotherapy are often recommended.

Supplements:

In terms of supplements, omega-3 essential fatty acids have been recommended. This healthy fat seems to improve irritability and depression in TS patients, which can help them better manage the stress that can trigger tics. Omega-3 essential fatty acids are crucial for behavioral and brain functions and can improve the hyperactivity and concentration levels in TS patients who also suffer from ADHD. Omega-3 fatty acids may benefit individuals by reducing tic-related impairment.

What are some food and supplements (e.g. collagen, vitamins) to avoid after the first and subsequent sessions of CO2 laser treatment?

Hi, In short, no. Food and supplements generally do not affect healing after CO2 laser treatment in a healthy person with no underlying nutritional deficiency. Alcohol may cause flushing and make the post-laser redness more obvious. This may be disturbing to the patient so alcohol intake should be reduced. More important factors that may result in poorer healing after CO2 laser treatment that should be avoided include UV exposure, smoking, early use of make-up before the skin has fully healed, unnecessary touching of the affected skin and picking on the scabs.

What supplements may improve brain function after an injury?

Many animal studies show that supplements have the potential for improving the effects of a brain injury but none have been shown to be of consistent benefit in human studies. Instead of focusing solely on supplements, it is important to talk about diet as well as most of our nutritional needs can be best obtained from food. May I suggest the following: 1. Increase dietary omega 3 DHA in diet and supplements. 2. Avoid sugar, alcohol, caffeine, stimulants, saturated/trans fats, highly salted foods 3.
