How will getting a tonsillectomy affect my voice?

Doctor's Answers 1

Firstly, tonsillectomy is generally a safe procedure [1]. However, risks may often occur in the first 2 weeks after the surgery [2]. Unlike other surgeries, the throat muscles stay exposed after the surgery. That said, other surgeries will involve closing the wound to protect the delicate tissues that are not usually exposed to the air, causing the risk of bleeding to increase [3].

As the tonsils sit on the throat muscles, the surgery will definitely affect the control of these muscles. Oral resonance may also be affected as there will be more room in the mouth for any resonate in after the surgery. In other words, you will have a change in voice with a more nasal tone [4]. Often, singers will struggle with this as it takes time for them to adapt to the new changes [5].

In many cases, it gives a muffled quality to your voice or even makes your pitch to be higher than usual [6].

Tonsil stones or tonsilloliths are common. They normally form from food or other debris which gets trapped in the tonsil crevices. They often are bilateral and are seen often as whitish, sometimes yellowish smelly small masses. Apart from causing bad breath; they are generally harmless but may indicate issues with oral hygiene or the state of the microenvironment in the throat. Tonsil cancers are usually one-sided and they frequently present with enlargement or asymmetry of one tonsil.

For a 6 year old who snores, is tonsils usually the cause, or are there other contributing factors? (photo)

Thank you for your enquiry. Snoring is one of the most common symptoms seen in my clinical practice. Although many may brush off snoring as just a social nuisance, it is important to be aware that snoring is often a sign of a potentially harmful condition known as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). OSA refers to a condition in which one chokes or momentarily "stops breathing" repetitively during sleep due to repeated episodes of upper airway collapse. Common causes of snoring, especially in children, include: 1.
