Do I need to see a psychiatrist for possible acne-related depression?

Doctor's Answers 4

Thank you for highlighting such a common problem. Apart from depression, the other mental health issue that came to my mind is that of social phobia or social anxiety disorder.

it will be good to consult a psychiatrist if you have mood problems and anxiety issues regarding your acne and how it has affected your looks and social life. Many individuals with severe acne problem and scars over the face have low self esteem as they think that they are not as good looking as many people around them. During treatment, your therapist can also rehearse with you how you can respond appropriately when people ask you about your acne condition and looks. We can this role play.

Many people would look at others beyond looks alone. For people who are truly your friends, they will be able ta appreciate you for your other inner qualities and attributes. Most of us are not such superficial beings.

Sorry to read about your suffering and social isolation. There is really no need for you to continue to suffer in silence. Do seek help from a mental health professional as soon as possible so that you do not wallow in self pity.

Cheers!

Sorry to hear that you’ve been struggling with depression. Certain medical conditions, esp. those affecting the way we look, can definitely affect our self esteem and social lives.

While I’m glad to hear that your skin condition has improved with treatment, I do think it would be helpful to have a chat with a psychiatrist to find out more about your condition, and if treatment (e.g. medications or psychotherapy) can help you cope better with these difficulties.

Thank you for your question.

Although acne is medically a skin condition, it brings about a multitude of psychological effects such as depression and anxiety. It is important to attend to your mental health as well.

You may go to see a doctor at a polyclinic for an assessment to see if you require a referral to a psychiatrist for possible acne-related depression. They may allow you to see a psychologist at the polyclinic or refer you to a psychiatrist based on their assessment.

Here are some useful resources for depression that may help you.

Hi there!

Acne is a common issue in our hot and humid Singapore, I feel you on that!

First of all, I think you should be assessed by a doctor to determine if you indeed have depression.

A visit to your friendly GP or polyclinic is a good first step. Some family doctors have a diploma in mental health, so they are competent in managing simple psychiatric disorders, so you do not really have to be seen by a psychiatrist unless it is necessary!

Should I request for a higher dose of Isotretinoin if I am on a low dose regime?

Pertaining to your isotretinoin dose, your dermatologist has done absolutely the right thing. I wouldn’t consider 30 mg low by any means. 10 – 15 mg is what’s normally considered to be in the “low range”. Even if you “shopped” around for a different doctor, I don’t think their dosage advice would differ too much from your dermatologist. Besides, it’s still relatively early days. 2 months in, and you are responding and improving. If I were you, I’d stick, rather than twist with the dose.

Is retacnyl, laser treatments or chemical peels more effective for eliminating acne scars?

Hi Aaron – I completely agree with whatever your doctor has done. I had asked about accutane but my doctor was hesitant in prescribing to me due to my history with depression. I’d err on the side of caution as well, as depression, although rare, is one of the side effects of accutane. Moreover, you described your acne as mild so accutane would be an overkill. My dermatologist said that the retacnyl will help to clear my acne(very few) and my dark spots and mild acne scars. Would it actually help to eliminate my acne scars?
