Is it possible to suffer dental trauma by biting down too hard on a mouthguard at night?

Doctor's Answers 1

Yes. When sleeping you could also be suffering from a condition called bruxism, which is the professional term for night grinding or teeth grinding at night. Some patients grind their teeth so heavily at night that over many years of constant grinding, you can see vertical cracks on their teeth and severe wear and tear on their teeth. And a lot of patients who grind their teeth don’t even realise that their teeth are so damaged because there is simply no pain just yet.

But as dentists, we’re trained to look out for all these signs of severe wear and tear, so that we can advise our patients to get the treatment done and prevent a catastrophic fracture of the tooth or a very severe toothache or further deterioration of the tooth that could lead to even expensive treatment down the road.

How can I address my habit of biting nails?

The first step to overcoming the habit or problem is to gain awareness of it and to make the decision to want to quit the habit. Think how embarrassing it can be if a celebrity were to bite his or her nails at a public place and people were to take a picture of it and circulate it. The second step is to identify the triggers that would make you want to bite your nails.

Which doctor performs excision of trauma irritated fibroma in mouth?

Thank you for your question. Oral fibromas are benign growths (consisting of scar tissue) in the mouth that usually appear following repeated trauma (usually from rubbing of your teeth or dentures/braces against the inner lining of your mouth or from accidental lip biting). The inner cheek area (buccal mucosa) would be most common.
