How do Invisalign and Smile Design compare in improving jaw shape?

Doctor's Answer

Neither method can correct the shape of the jaws which is governed by the bone structure. The only method to alter the shape of the jaws would be through Orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery). If what needs correcting are lips and facial profiles, then both methods can certainly make improvements.

Invisalign uses CADCAM technology to alter tooth position. Mock-ups can be digitally rendered on a 2D picture of the patient [1].

Smiledesign uses a 3D mock-up of the patient's teeth. The patient is also able to experience a physical mock-up of their smile. Especially how the new smile works with regards to their other teeth, gums, lips, smile and their face. This process involves detailed communication between the patient and the designer (your dentist).
