How would a wider dental arch change my appearance?

Doctor's Answers 1

A narrow arch reduces the number of teeth that can be seen when you smile and creates very large shadows between your teeth and your cheeks. In addition, they can seem to make the teeth appear more protruding.

There is an American concept called, "widening your smile". This can be done easily and quickly with dental veneers. The planning for such a procedure is critical as too narrow a final smile defeats the point too wide a smile will make you look extremely toothy.

Ultimately, it is important that the smile the dentist achieves is one that suits you.

In what situations would veneers only be needed on the top arch?

Veneers on a single arch are actually very common. This is usually because most of the desired corrections are done in the more visible part of the mouth, which is usually the upper front teeth. From a functional perspective, the front and incisal surfaces of the upper front teeth are not as heavily loaded during chewing as that of the lower front teeth. This is why most veneer cases usually do not include the lower incisors.

Apart from braces, what can be done to improve the appearance of my teeth? (photo)

Some patients may just want straight teeth and are not concerned with the proportions of the teeth or the colour. A harmonious smile has optimal aesthetics in: tooth size, position, proportions, shape and colour. Some patients like a very obvious "done" look with very white and straight teeth with little variation in tooth form. They may feel that it is not worth spending so much on their teeth if people cannot tell at first glance what they have spent their money on. Other patients may prefer subtle aesthetics that is hyper-natural but "perfected".
