How to treat dry scalp and hair loss in a 21 year old female? (photo)

Doctor's Answer

Firstly, let me address your concern about the dry and itchy scalp. The scale that you showed a picture of could represent a range of possible 'flaky skin conditions' - commonly, on the scalp, pityriasis capitis and seborrheic dermatitis are likely diagnoses. A thorough scalp examination should be able to establish a diagnosis. Other less likely possibilities include atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

Certain medicated shampoos such as ketoconazole 2%, used correctly, can help to control the malassaezia yeast that is thought to be responsible for this condition. Other options include using coal tar based shampoos or a scalp lotion that has a mild exfoliant with an itch-controlling component such as beprosalic lotion.

Tablet anti-itch medications can also help to control the itch.

Secondly, we will have to address the issue of hair loss in a young lady.

This can be extremely distressing and is most probably precipitated by the inflammation going on on the scalp and hair follicles. As hair loss is a complex topic, with a whole constellation of possible diagnoses, it would be best to have a proper hair loss consultation and examination to exclude other causes of hair loss before prescribing any treatment.

I hope this helps!

Warm Regards,

Dr Joshua Chong
