How to test for rheumatoid arthritis?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thanks for your question and certainly interesting. There are a couple of ways that joint pains can be investigated, including blood tests, ultrasound examinations and X-rays. Often, this is preceded by a thorough clinical assessment including history and physical examination. unfortunately, in some patients with conditions such as RA, blood tests can be negative at first presentation and hence the clinical assessment is really important.

If you are concerned about arthritis, I would suggest seeing a GP, MSK physician. They can perform investigations and refer onwards if necessary. Treatments can vary according to severity and the underlying problem.

I hope this helps.

Does strengthening core muscles eg) sit ups, squats etc lead to muscles becoming stiff and inflexible? Sit ups and squats are compound exercises, meaning they involve multiple muscle group and mimic real world 3 dimensional movement of your body. The main benefit of compound exercises is precisely that they recruit more muscle groups – muscles that are worked more will be more flexible and less stiff. Think of it like a spring, connecting two body parts.

Does trigger point treatment work for a stiff neck?

My answer, to your question in brief is that it’s worth a shot (pun not intended). From your details, you clearly fall into what doctors term “expert patients”. Ie. you’ve done a significant amount of online reading into your problem, and possible solutions. Not to mention, sought the advice of multiple specialists. So please take my online reply for what it is – an extremely limited internet source (without the requisite examination, investigation results, specialist opinions and detailed questioning that a doctor seeing you in person would have).
