The soreness or ache in your muscles are due to an accumulation of lactic acid built up during the exercise. Generally, I recommend to my patients to stop training when there is any pain as it is the body’s way of telling you that you are doing too much.

If there is onset of soreness or aches in the muscles 12 – 24 hours after training, it is normal, let the soreness and ache abate before the next session.

If the soreness persists without reducing in intensity at all, it is abnormal and please see a doctor for review.

The most common cause of the symptoms described is trigger finger. Trigger finger is a condition where the tendons controlling flexion of the digit become inflamed and swollen. As these tendons glide in and out within a fitting tunnel called a tendon sheath, any increase in girth of these tendons can disrupt the smooth gliding action. Trigger finger is categorized into 4 grades. Grade 1 trigger finger: Initially, the additional friction from the swelling of the tendons cause pain when moving the finger.

What is the cause and treatment for knee cap pain?

Thank you for your question – I fully empathise with you symptoms as it’s a very common. As Dr Alan has mentioned, there can be many causes for anterior (at the front) knee pain. Rather than go through the causes again, perhaps I could suggest a few simple things to try out when managing your symptoms. Firstly, stretching; often, we tend to develop tight muscles in the front of our legs (commonly called quads and hip flexors) – when these are tight, it might be pulling he knee cap more tightly into the thigh bone.
