How painful are dental veneers?

Doctor's Answers 2

Good news, dental veneers are not known to be painful procedure because we're not working on the nerves of your teeth, unlike in a root canal procedure where absolute numbness is required. It's typically a pain-free procedure.

After your dentist numbs your teeth and gums, you will not be able to feel much of the procedure. The mild trimming of the enamel layer is usually painless. In some cases, when I employ minimally preparation techniques, I'm able to do it without any local anesthesia. However, this has to be assesed on a case by case basis.

I am sorry to hear that you have a phobia of dentists. Don't worry, you are not alone. Many of my patients have the same phobia too. If you're feeling nervous before the procedure, you can always opt to have some laughing gas or nitrous oxide to calm yourself down.

One more way to over come the situation is by I/V sedation. We usually have an anaesthetist on board when performing this. They take care of your nervousness and pain control while I work on your teeth.

It is almost a given that is modern local anesthesia as well as having no pain while having your teeth trimmed and prepared for veneers.

Some other considerations are that your muscles may get late and tired from opening your long dental appointment. This can be reduced by acting, which acts as a cushion for you to rest your jaw on.

The main concern is the level of soreness or pain experienced by veneers once local anesthesia and / or IV sedation has been worn off.

Once the local anesthesia is not uncommon for patients to feel:

1. Soreness in the gums

2. Sensitivity to cold, hot and sweet things (usually temporary)

3. Sensitivity when biting (usually temporary)

The degree of sensitivity and sensitivity varies from person to person and the amount of tooth that is trimmed can also affect the levels of sensitivity.

In general, when more tooth is trimmed, more sensitivity is experienced and vice versa.

In certain rare cases, the sensitivity is severe and does not go away. In these cases, the root canal treatment maybe needed to cure the sensitivity.

Every case is different and you will go through a thorough consent-taking process with your prior to starting veneer treatment, potential risks and complications that might occur.

I hope this information is useful to you!

Can chewing habits correct an asymmetric jaw?

I fully agree with Dr Lee that chewing on one side will do little to help with the problem. In my experience as an aesthetic physician, it is as Dr Lee said, most of us have mild asymmetries, and almost every case of asymmetry has a mixture of BOTH bony and muscular elements. If the asymmetry is bothering you, I would suggest some botox and fillers first to correct it as a temporary measure. I would refer to my dental or orthodontic colleagues to correct teeth alignment and jaw surgery for better functional outcomes and long-lasting results.

Do braces change your facial profile?

You have asked a very interesting question and I am afraid the answer is yes and no! I will try to explain it as best I can. Braces CAN change profiles: Braces can change profiles only when the orthodontists and the patient plan to get it changed from the START of the treatment. A good example is when patients complain that when taking photographs, they notice that their side profile is sticking out and they have a very full smile (most patients use the terms, I look like a horse!) In this case, braces can help to retract the teeth to allow the patient to have a softer, gentler profile.
