How old can women be before they must stop taking estrogen-containing contraceptive pills because of menopause?

Doctor's Answers 1

When does menopause usually occur?

The normal age of menopause can occur in women between the ages of 45-55 years old with the average age around 50-51.

Do I still need to take oral contraception during menopause?

The start of menopause is said to occur once a woman has not had a period for 1 year. Depending on when this has occurred, you cannot get pregnant. Hence there is no need to take oral contraception anymore.

How should I continue taking my oral contraceptive pill after stopping it?

It would be important for you to get a work up of the irregular periods first before you resume your Yasmin. Resuming birth control pills is ideally done with the first day of your period, but this should only be after other causes of your irregular periods have been excluded. Hope this helps.

What should I do if I missed my second dose of emergency contraceptive pills?

There are 2 types of emergency oral contraceptives available. The one that you are on involves you taking 2 tablets 12 hours apart. Since you have missed your second dose, you cannot rely on this method anymore so you will need to restart the whole regime again (in that you need to take 1 pill immediately and make sure this time you remember to take the second pill 12 hours later) in order for this to be effective. If it has been more than 3 days since your last act of unprotected sexual intercourse, this method will also not work.
