How long is the time frame for immediate dental implants?

Doctor's Answers 1

The duration of the surgical procedure really depends on the number of implants being placed.

If one implant is placed, removing one tooth, a typical procedure like that could be an hour long. But if you have 2 or 3 immediate implants, that could take up to 2 to 3 hours, sometimes even 4 hours.

Sometimes, when we put immediate implants, we also do simultaneous procedures like a bone graft. Sometimes we do immediate implants with a simultaneous gum graft.

So we can do a few simultaneous procedures with the implant which could lengthen the duration of the procedure.

Which treatment, a root canal or a dental implant, is more time-flexible and will result in less bone loss after tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction will always cause bone loss in the extraction site. When a tooth is removed, functional forces cannot be transmitted to the bone supporting that tooth. Bone loss occurs to conserve resources (to build and maintain bone at the same volume). This is a physiological (natural) phenomenon that keeps our bodies functioning efficiently. There are techniques to reduce (but not prevent) bone loss (bone grafting) at the time of extraction. Bone grafting using artificial bone does not produce the same volume of native (a continuation of the patient's own jawbone) bone.

When is it advisable to replace my baby tooth with an implant?

Thank you for your enquiry on baby teeth and dental implants. From the Dental Panoramic Xray that you have provided , it is seen that you have several over-retained baby teeth due to congenitally missing adult teeth. Generally speaking, it is advisable to replace your baby tooth with an implant if :1. It is badly decayed2. It is very loose and mobile3. It is cracked, damaged or badly worn down4. It is affecting the way you smile because it is aesthetically not pleasing to you5.
