Cholecystitis or inflammation of the gallbladder is best treated with early removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy).

In Singapore, it is usually performed as a key-hole procedure (laparoscopic approach) and in expert hands [1], a single key-hole may only be needed (Single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy) which leaves no obvious scar and has been proven to be more acceptable by patients and has less pain [2][3].

The only exception is when the patient is not fit for surgery, i.e. the patient has other medical conditions with prohibitive risks of general anaesthesia. In which case, in an acute setting, the patient may then be treated with antibiotics and possibly a drainage tube may have to be placed into the gallbladder through the skin under local anaesthesia to drain out the pus.

What is recovery like after laparoscopic gallbladder removal?

Depending on the nature of the surgery and pre-existing conditions of the individual, the recovery period can be within a few days to more than a week. Assuming a minimally invasive surgery is done electively without any immediate complication, most patients are fit for discharge after 2-3 days. Do expect some loose stools for the following 2-3 months post surgery especially after ingestion of oily food. This is the time required for the body to make adjustments without the gallbladder. Most people can resume their usual diet and activity after this period.

What TCM treatments are available for gastric problems causing bloating and stomach discomfort?

From the TCM point of view, gastric problems are closely related to the function of spleen and stomach. These two organs are responsible for the transformation and transportation of the food that we consume. When the spleen and stomach is weakened, it can lead to many digestive issues such as bloated, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach-ache, ingestion etc. In TCM, the most common treatment for these internal problems would be herbal medicine. Herbal medicines are prescribed according to each patient's body constitution.
