How does prednisolone work, and why is it effective for so many different conditions?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi

Prednisolone is a steroid. Steroids have many different effects in the body, some good and some negative. In essence, a steroid injection will suppress the local inflammatory response, to help with pain symptoms. Localised injections of steroid (https://sportsmedinfo.sg/treatment/steroid-injections/) tend not to have the same systemic (body-wide) side effects as oral steroids, which include changes to blood sugar, blood pressure, fat distribution in the body, stretch marks, hair thinning, agitation etc.

By suppressing the immune response, oral steroids can help with many of the body-wide conditions.

Should I continue taking prednisolone for cystic acne?

I agree with the views expressed by the other doctors. Oral steroids have anti-inflammatory effects and can help your cystic acne and rash. However, long term use can cause a lot of other side effects and it is not recommended as the treatment for cystic acne. In fact, with continued use, you may notice even more acne lesions appearing as long term steroid use can aggravate acne. There are many other good treatments available for cystic acne. You should also get your other skin rash examined to determine the cause. While it responds to steroids, it again is not a recommended long term.

Can perlane fillers be seen on a CT scan?

Perlane fillers can be seen on CT scan as soft tissue at the location where it’s injected, especially if it’s injected as a bolus. Fret not, the radiologist and radiographer would have seen many such cases, so do not expect them to be surprised at the findings. In fact, you can let the doctor know this, so that the radiologist doesn’t mistake it as other structures in his interpretation of the scan.
