How do I know if my dental implants are osseointegrated?

Doctor's Answers 1

Well, if there is osseointegration failure, typically how it presents itself is that the implant is loose, no longer firm in the gum or bone. Otherwise, the implant is wobbly and it happens sometimes due to an infection.

So we always look out for swelling, pus, or abscess, anything that could indicate an infection in that area.

If the surgical site is infected and osseointegration occurs then I'm afraid the immediate implant has to be removed and we have to start all over again.

We remove the immediate implant, maybe put a bone graft in, and then we transfer the case to a delayed implant. So if the immediate implant fails the first time, for me, I will always have the second attempt be a delayed implant if the first one fails.

How do I know when I need dental implants?

I do a lot of root canal treatment and to make a natural tooth look good, especially your front tooth, is quite easy. To make a front implant look good is extremely difficult. You’ll need multiple surgeries, not only to place the implants but also to graft the gums and all that. If the patient is quite young, meaning in their 20s or 30s, our skeleton keeps growing so the rest of the teeth will keep moving down but the implant doesn’t move. So when you hit your 50s you’ll have this cosmetic problem that’s very difficult to fix.

What is the potential impact of dental implants on neighbouring teeth if I also have malocclusion?

I work in a multidisciplinary clinic and we see patients coming to visit us with lost teeth every day and looking for a solution and they also have some teeth alignment issues. It is important for these patients are examined by both the restorative dentist and orthodontist for the best treatment outcome before deciding on what is the best treatment solution. This is because the main problem with a dental implant is it fuses with the bone and can’t be moved with orthodontic treatment.
