How can I treat PTSD in Singapore?

Doctor's Answers 2

Persons with PTSD usually have experienced a traumatic incident. It will be good to get attention from an experienced psychiatrist as soon as possible so that you do not have to suffer in silence any further.

Treatments include medications (SSRIs to dampen the arousal, decrease nightmares and stabilise mood) and psychological interventions. Sufferers of PTSD can have relief from their bad experiences, so do seek treatment early.

Thank you for asking this question that will benefit a lot of patients.

It is very terrible to have to undergo a traumatic experience. It is important to seek treatment as early as possible as it can lead to other mental health and physical health issues.

The mainstay of treatment is still psychological, or "talk therapy". There could be many treatment types within psychological treatment. But the first step is getting yourself to the room of a trained clinical psychologist. These people should have a post graduate qualification in clinical/counselling psychology.

Once you are there, the psychologist might use the following:

1) Cognitive behavioural therapy

2) Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

3) Mindfulness and relaxation therapy

Or combinations and many other effective treatments.

And of course if all else fails, you might need medicatons.

Take care.

What is the cost for private and public treatment of depression in Singapore?

Thank you for posing your question for the benefit of everyone. It can be difficult to answer your question because it really depends on many things. Cost really shouldn't be your only concern in seeking treatment. It really isn't shopping. You should start by seeking the advice of your trusted GP if you have one. Some GPs like us are more trained in mental health problems, there are a few of them out there, and they probably are the first you might want to ask first for advice.

What are my other treatment options if antidepressants and talk therapy do not seem to be working?

Thank you for sharing details about your situation and experience with psychiatric treatment. Your issues pertain mainly to anxiety and depression. May I make the following comments: 1. So far you have been tried on an antidepressant under the family of SSRI (serotonin specific reuptake inhibitor). There are many antidepressant medications that come under this family. It is not uncommon for a person not to respond to a particular SSRI and yet will respond to another SSRI. If you look at the chemical structure of the SSRIs, you will realise that they are very different from one another.
