How can I prevent pregnancy stretch marks?

Doctor's Answers 1

In general, stretchmarks start developing in the late 2nd to 3rd trimester. Not all women develop stretchmarks.

Some risk factors for the development of stretch marks include:

  1. Greater weight gain or distension of the abdomen, such as in multiple pregnancy or large fetus
  2. Genetic predisposition
  3. Greater melanin content in skin.

Avoid putting on too much weight too fast!

Various creams are on the market to prevent stretch marks. Unfortunately there is no clear evidence that individual topical agents necessarily work for the prevention of stretchmarks.

However keeping the skin well moisturised and supple might reduce the likelihood of stretch marks. They will look the most prominent initially, and generally will fade away over the next six months to a year after delivery.

How can I get a definitive diagnosis for a skin condition in Singapore?

It must be frustrating to be having these itchy rashes for 3 weeks. PUPPP often occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy and improves on delivery, although I have seen some people develop this condition after delivery. To be more certain about the diagosis of your skin condition, you might want to consider visiting your dermatologist. Dermatologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders and will be able to assess your condition and advise you on the appropriate treatment and management.

How can I give birth naturally if I am overweight?

In general, there are a few considerations that we will look at for natural birth in overweight mothers: 1. Stage of your pregnancy 2. Size of your baby 3. Position of your baby 4. Presence of existing medical conditions or complications such as diabetes, position of your placenta etc. Of course, if you are in the pre-pregnancy stage and planning for a child with the goal of delivering naturally, then it is highly advisable to kick-start a weight loss programme.
