How are braces fitted on teeth?

Doctor's Answers 1

The first step is to establish that your teeth are healthy.

Because it is harder to put braces onto unhealthy teeth, any crown or implant.

Once the teeth are healthy we will clean them and then we will use a chemical agent to clean the teeth and treat the surface to allow the cement from the braces to glue onto the teeth. Then we harden it with a blue light.

Once it is on, it is very strong. Because it is cement, it is still subjected to deterioration over time and a very hard impact can still scrap it off.

What are the benefits of Damon braces as compared to traditional braces?

The purported "benefits" of Damon braces include shorter treatment time, less pain and eliminating the need for extractions. Dentists may like Damon brackets because it is less time-consuming to change wires. The purported benefits are mostly marketing claims that have no real impact on the biomechanics of how teeth move and how an orthodontic case is planned. Your teeth ultimately cannot sense if you are wearing regular brackets or Damon brackets! The UK Advertising Standards Authority passed a ruling on claims by Damon (Ormco) which you can read here.

What areas of oral health do I need to take note of before and after removing my braces?

Thank you for your excellent question. Braces are stuck onto your teeth and with the braces wire in place, food gets stuck more easily around the teeth. Hence good oral health is imperative for a healthy mouth during the period of braces treatment which typically takes 1- 2 years. Good oral health care has 2 arms, excellent oral hygiene and a healthy diet. During braces treatment, it is important to clean all the corners of the braces and under the braces wire with either interproximal brushes or interspace brushes. Brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day is recommended.
