For very deep acne scars, what are recommended treatment methods? (photo)

Hi,

You have deep ice-pick scars. These deep scars are best dealt with in 2 stages.

The first stage involves converting the deep scars to shallower scars. Scar excision and TCA cross are methods to achieve this.

The second stage involves blurring the scar outline and lifting the scar up further. Fractional CO2 lasering, fractional microneedle RF, fractional picosecond lasering are methods to achieve this.

Stage 2 procedures may be started 3-4 weeks after complete healing from stage 1 procedures.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

You do have a combination of deep Box scars, Ice pick scars and some that are tethered down.

Personally, I would recommend a combination of treatments involving Subscision, TCA CROSS and Skin Resurfacing modalities (Co2, Erbium, Microneedle RF) as these treatments are able to treat each scar type optimally.

Multiple sessions will be required and treatment is to be done at least 4 weeks apart. Downtime / redness will be expected for a few days to a week on average.

Do speak with your treating physician on the pros / cons of each treatment.

Hope that helps.

All the best!

Is the fractional radiofrequency, CO2 laser or erbium laser more effective for deep acne scars?

With regards to your question: Fractional CO2 lasers generally penetrates deeper than Erbium lasers Fractional CO2 lasers also generally penetrates deeper than Fractional RF devices EXCEPT Microneedle RF machines that can reach a depth of 3. 5mm (only in some machines) which in this case will have a greater penetration depth as compared to Fractional CO2 machines.

Can aloe vera gel help with acne scars?

Hi, As acne scars are deep and due to disorganized collagen scar tissues formed following active acne inflammation, topicals (creams, gel, lotions) are generally ineffective in treating them. Hence, aloe vera gel will not help with acne scars. Effective treatment of acne scars is mainly based on controlled “wounding” of the affected skin so that the skin may lay down new and more organized collagen during the healing process leading to clinical scar improvement. Such treatments include microneedling, subcision, scar revision, and energy-based resurfacing e. g. fractional lasers.
