Does the menstrual cycle cause eczema flare-ups?

Doctor's Answers 1

I think it is possible. There is a type of eczema that is called oestrogen or progesterone dermatitis. So, these are eczema or dermatitis that is related to levels of hormones in the body.

For some people, during the time of their menstrual cycle, they can get premenstrual exacerbation because they have this. But it is quite rare and not common. But we do know that it is a recognised entity either oestrogen or progesterone dermatitis and that may be reasons why those eczemas can flare during the menstrual cycle.

Should someone with eczema avoid certain foods?

Hi Jian Hua, There are many causes for eczema, mostly due to a genetic predisposition. We consider food allergy causing skin rashes if the child has recently tried the food (usually during the weaning periods) and has demonstrated consistent skin rashes every time that particular food is introduced. It is unusual to gain a food allergy if the child has been eating the same food for a long period of time without any skin or gut problems. Skin rashes due to food allergies tend to be severe, and occur with every single ingestion of the suspected food.

Does facial laser treatment trigger psoriasis?

Thanks for the question. If you have a diagnosis of psoriasis, there is a possibility that certain treatments can aggravate it. With psoriasis, damage or injury to the skin can cause psoriasis to develop at the site of the injury. This is know as the Koebner phenomenon. Therefore, you do have to take care that the treatment is gentle and does not cause any trauma or damage to the skin. Likewise, for eczema, the skin is sensitive and more prone to external insults, so you should avoid treatment if the facial skin is still red or irritated as this can be more easily aggravate by treatment.
