Plastic Surgery is one of the fields in medicine that is constantly reinventing itself, combining old techniques with new technology, applying new concepts to our existing understanding of anatomy. We have now improved and safer fat grafting technique with higher yields using a PureGraft system and better and safer breast implants for augmentation.

I’m sure there will be newer techniques that will be developed. However, as highlighted by Dr. Ho, the non-invasive techniques have to be as reliable as the standard ones.

Depending on the degree of ptosis and the strength of the levator mechanism, some patients are suitable for a minimally invasive eyelid lift. This is only for patients with mild ptosis. Through small 2mm incisions, the ptosis can be corrected without the need for a traditional incision. The downtime and recovery is much shorter. The key to the success of this technique is patient selection and only patients with mild ptosis will have good results.

Hope this helps and All the best on your journey!

I would say never say never. Because a lot of procedures we do now, if you think of it ten years ago, people will say that’s not really possible, now we have a lot of research, not just for plastic surgery but for any other specialities. Certainly, if we can do something that is minimally invasive, we will choose the more minimally invasive procedure but we also have to be sure that the less invasive procedure produces the same results. There is no point doing a procedure that only lasts 6 months, so that aspect of it is very important.

Can ptosis be corrected without creating double eyelids?

Thank you for your interesting question. Many patients are usually more concerned about the presence of double eyelids and hence most of the ptosis repair surgeries I have done are usually combined with double eyelid surgery. Whilst double eyelid blepharoplasty remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries performed in patient with Asian eyelids, the shape of the eye and correction of ptosis is far more important than just creating a fold. I have had patients who identify strongly with their monolids and would not want to have that changed.

What are the factors in determining whether ptosis surgery is insurance claimable or not in Singapore?

Thank you for your question! Blepharoptosis or ptosis for short is a medical condition where there is dropping of the upper eyelid. The resulting symptoms are visual field obstruction, lid asymmetry, lid heaviness, frontal/temporal headaches, forehead lines and so on. To answer your question on whether it is insurance claimable: it would depend on the severity of the ptosis. Mild ptosis is generally not claimable, with it needing to be moderate or severe before it is.
