In general, if the wound is infected, there can be pus present or discharging from the wound. The pus is usually very yellow and thick and may be foul smelling. The wound itself may be red, inflamed and tender. There may be some slough on the surface of the wound.
Normal wounds may have serous discharge. This is usually clear and less thick then pus and not foul smelling.
