What are the contraindications for getting Invisalign, Zenyum, Clear Smile etc.?

Doctor's Answer

Clear aligner as a treatment alternative to traditional braces is indeed a growing market, thanks to the advances in 3D technology. It is no wonder that in recent times, there are quite a few clear aligner companies in the market. Invisalign, Zenyum and Clear Smile are all laboratories that produce clear aligners which are custom made appliances that gradually push teeth to effect the same result as braces except that these braces are less conspicuous, more comfortable and removable.

However, Zenyum and Clear Smile laboratories are only able to produce aligners that correct front teeth alignment and cannot manage complex treatments that require extractions.

In my personal opinion, Invisalign is able to manage simple to complex malocclusions, and may sometimes be a better option than traditional braces in cases such as an anterior open bite or patients who are unable to have metal braces due to medical reasons.

In my opinion, these are some clinical situations where I feel that clear aligners may not be as suitable and these include:

  1. Impacted teeth that require orthodontic traction
  2. Deep bite cases requiring extraction
  3. Patients who feel they will not be so compliant as they need to frequently snack and need to take lots of small meals. Clear aligner treatment is very dependent on patient compliance, you need to wear the aligners for 20-22 hours a day in order for the appliance to be effective. Hence if you feel you are not able to commit to this then it may not be the right appliance for you.
  4. Large spaces that require the back teeth to move forward by more than 3mm (e.g molar extraction spaces)

In deciding if clear aligner treatment is suitable for you, it is best to consult your dentist/orthodontist who will be able to examine your treatment needs and recommend the best appliance tailored to your individual needs.
