A one year old child can take chlorpheniramine for a runny nose. The dosage needed is dependent on the child's weight. Please consult your doctor on the dosage to be given.

How effective is chlorpheniramine for runny nose symptoms?

Chlorpheniramine is a first generation antihistamine. It is actually a very effective and potent medication that had been proven to be very safe over the years. The main issue with chlorpheniramine is that it requires an 8 hourly dosing, and it can cause significant drowsiness, thus affecting work, driving and operating machinery. The newer generations have less of these side effects and require less frequent dosing.

For a respiratory infection that causes sore throat, fever, cough, runny nose and muscle aches, how do doctors determine whether antibiotic treatment is required?

Thank you for your enquiry. A common cold is caused by a virus and the symptoms that you've just described, "sore throat, fever, cough, runny nose and muscle ache", are very suggestive of a cold. However, in the early stages, bacterial sinusitis can also present in a similar fashion. A bacterial sinus infection (sinusitis) requires treatment with oral antibiotics while a common cold usually resolves on its on with adequate rest and hydration. As a guide, if your cold-like or flu-like symptoms are worsening after 5 days or last longer than 10 days, antibiotics will likely be prescribed.
