Can gout be permanently cured?

Doctor's Answers 1

When you say “cured”, one presumes that this means you will never develop it again. This is difficult to say but if you take your medication during a flare, it should shorten the duration, and lifestyle modifications/medications can reduce the risk of developing it again. If you are “flare-free” for some time, you can try coming off the medications and continue the preventative measures through diet and lifestyle.

Since chiropractors are not recognised in Singapore, which other health professionals provide effective back pain treatment in a healthy person?

The main aim of treating back pain is to identify and prevent further damage to the spine. This is best achieved by seeing your family physician or a specialist. They may order an MRI to exclude any major pathology and to recommend the best course of therapy. For back therapy, I would recommend seeing an accredited physiotherapist, exercise therapist or even an acupuncturist if you prefer the TCM approach. Generally, I would not recommend any form of back manipulation unless the MRI shows that the lumbar disc is healthy with no annular tear.

What are the symptoms of Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) and ringworm (tinea corporis)? (photo)

Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal infection affecting the feet and tinea corporis is a fungal infection affecting the body and limbs. Tinea or fungal infections often present with rashes that are ring-shaped and scaly. The rash is usually itchy. Less commonly, the area may have small blisters or tiny pustules. Areas which are more prone to sweat and moisture like the feet and groin areas are more commonly affected and fungal infections are more prone in individuals who perspire a lot. Sometimes, feet eczema can also present with itchy and scaly rashes.
